Muscat is a browser extension that saves words you choose, together with the sentence they came from. This page explains exactly what that involves. The short version: Muscat only stores what you explicitly save, uses it only to show you your vocabulary, and never sells it, shares it for advertising or tracks you.
What we collect
- Your account: your email address and a password. The password is stored only as a salted hash by our authentication provider; we never see it.
- Words you save: when you select text and press Save, Muscat stores the word or phrase, the sentence around it, the address and title of the page, and the time you saved it.
Before a page address leaves your browser, Muscat removes anything private or
unnecessary: the part after #, tracking parameters (such as
utm_* or fbclid), parameters that look like passwords, tokens,
signatures or email addresses, and any user:password@ credentials. Email
addresses are also removed from page titles.
What we don't collect
- Your browsing history, or which pages you visit.
- The content of pages, apart from the one sentence around a word you save.
- Anything you type into forms, passwords on websites, or payment details.
- Analytics, advertising identifiers, cookies or device fingerprints.
To show the Save button next to your selection, the extension runs on the pages you visit. It only reacts when you select text, and nothing leaves the page unless you press Save. It ignores text fields and editable areas.
How we use it
Your data is used for one thing: showing you your saved words, grouped by word, in the Muscat popup. Your email address is used to sign you in and to send account emails (confirming your address, resetting your password). We don't send marketing emails.
Muscat's use of data complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, use it to determine creditworthiness, or let anyone else read it.
Where it is stored
- Supabase stores your account and saved words in a database in the European Union (Ireland). Each account can only read its own words; this is enforced by the database itself.
- Resend delivers account emails from servers in the European Union (Ireland).
-
Cloudflare hosts this website and the
muscat.inkdomain. This site sets no cookies and runs no scripts.
In your browser, the extension keeps your sign-in session, words waiting to be synced (for example while you're offline) and a small word-count cache in the extension's own storage. This data stays on your computer and is removed when you sign out or uninstall Muscat.
All traffic between the extension and our servers is encrypted (HTTPS).
Features that use other services
- Pronunciation uses your browser's built-in text-to-speech. Depending on the voice your browser picks, the word may be processed by your browser or operating system vendor.
- Dictionary links open the word on the Oxford Learner's Dictionaries website in a new tab. That site's own privacy policy applies there.
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep your saved words until you delete them. You can delete any word, with all its sentences, from the Muscat popup at any time; it is removed from our database right away.
To delete your account and everything in it, email hello@muscat.ink from the address you signed up with. We delete the account and all its words within 30 days and confirm by email. You can also ask us for a copy of your data the same way.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask to access, correct, export or delete your data, or object to how we process it. If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, our legal basis is the performance of the service you signed up for, and you may also complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
Muscat is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page. If a change affects what we collect or how we use it, we'll tell you by email before it takes effect.
